Then she became lost in thought, tears forming in her eyes. Her father entered the kitchen, carrying a bag of groceries filled with chicken, vegetables, fruit and juice. Alice covered her tears and turned away to put the dinners in the oven. \u201cHow was the meeting?\u201d she asked. \u201cSobering,\u201d he replied, placing the groceries on the counter. \u201cVery funny. Since when are you such a smart shopper?\u201d He started unloading the bags. \u201cSince my little girl became a mom.\u201d Alice hesitated. \u201cAre you disappointed in me?\u201d \u201cNo, I\u2019m not. I sort of hope it\u2019s a boy. It\u2019d be nice to have a boy playing in the house again.\u201d Alice looked at him and hugged him. He gently pried her away and managed a little smile. \u201cJust don\u2019t make a habit of it.\u201d Alice smiled. \u201cI loved him, daddy. And now that he\u2019s gone&#8230;\u201d Her father nodded. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sitting on the edge of her bed, Greta held a porcelain china doll as she stared at it, lost in thought. Dolls were all around her, propped up on pillows, and covering her dresser and chairs. Her eyes moved to something at her feet. It was an 8\u201d x 10\u201d blow-up of a snapshot taken on graduation day. Dan was in the center, surrounded by his parents and friends. Greta\u2019s eyes welled up. A tear trickled down her cheek.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreta!\u201d her mother\u2019s shrill voice called out. \u201cOur guests are waiting, dear. Appearances, you know. Let\u2019s not make them impatient.\u201d \u201cComing, mother,\u201d Greta replied. She joined the others at the dining table in mid-conversation. \u201cIt\u2019s true,\u201d Racine Gibson said, sitting at the head of the massive table. \u201cPeople are always mistaking us for sisters.\u201d The well-dressed guests nodded and smiled politely. \u201cGreta certainly has the perfect body for modeling,\u201d a gray-haired woman said. \u201cYou know, Eileen Ford is a friend of mine. I told her about you Greta. She\u2019s very interested in her.\u201d Greta sat at the far end of the table, looking uninterested. \u201cGreta,\u201d Racine said, \u201cyou\u2019re being offered the chance of a lifetime! I think you should show a little gratitude.\u201d \u201cOne of my friends died yesterday, mother,\u201d Greta said. \u201cDo you mind if I take a few hours to remember him?\u201d \u201cBut we\u2019re having a party, dear.\u201d Greta glared at her mother. \u201cI read about him,\u201d an older man said. \u201cDrunk or something, wasn\u2019t he?\u201d \u201cHe was just a friend of Greta\u2019s,\u201d Racine interjected. \u201cNot someone  special&#8230; not someone she was seeing, you understand. Really just an acquaintance.\u201d \u201cSad,\u201d a portly man said. \u201cIt reminds me of Fitzgerald. Although in his stories, it\u2019s generally the women who have pointless violent deaths.\u201d The other guests jumped in with their literary allusions and comparisons. Greta closed her eyes to shut them out. For a second, she seemed to nod. Then she caught herself.<\/p>\n<p>As she looked up, the caterer, Frederick, stepped forward and offered her selections from a tray. A green and red striped bowtie topped off the starched collar of his frilly white serving shirt. Greta shook her head. \u201cNo thank you, I\u2019m not hungry.\u201d Frederick stepped away as the other guests halted their conversation to stare at her. \u201cAren\u2019t you eating?\u201d Racine said with alarm. \u201cI don\u2019t really feel up to it.\u201d The other guests began eating voraciously. \u201cReally, dear. You ought to try something.\u201d \u201cYou\u2019re the one who\u2019s always slapping my hand about weight-watching!\u201d Greta snapped. Her mother glanced nervously at the other guests. \u201cBut that\u2019s why we diet, dear,\u201d Racine said in a shrill tone. \u201cSo we can eat at social events and not upset the other guests.\u201d \u201cMadam,\u201d Frederick intruded, \u201cif I may&#8230;\u201d Frederick wheeled in a trolley with a sterling silver chafing dish upon it. He turned to Greta and pushed the tray to the hideous baby chair in which Greta was now sitting. The tray pinned her in place. The guests continued to eat while Racine beamed approvingly. Frederick removed the lid of the sterling silver chafing dish, revealing a perfect, miniature doll-like replica of Greta. Greta\u2019s eyes widened as she stared at Frederick. He was now Freddy. Freddy proceeded to filet the doll in front of Greta\u2019s horrified eyes with a blade on his clawed hand. A sharpened silver spoon appeared on the end of another blade. Freddy scooped into the dissected doll and began feeding Greta, forcing some mush into her mouth. Greta resisted, turning her head to spit it out. Freddy jerked her head forward and forced another spoonful of mush in her mouth. \u201cYou are what you eat!\u201d The table guests laughed. \u201cNothing but the best for Greta!\u201d Racine said. Greta struggled helplessly, moaning and groaning her objections. \u201cDon\u2019t talk with your mouth full, dear,\u201d Racine said. Freddy shoved another claw-full of mush into Greta\u2019s mouth. She started choking. He pulled her close and patted her on the back, like a parent burping an infant. The dinner guests stared in shocked amazement as Greta, her face blue, stood with her arms out, leaning forward as though suspended, as if Freddy were still holding her. Then she pitched forward face first into her plate. Greta\u2019s mother looked on in bewilderment. \u201cGreta?\u201d  <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That night, Alice and Yvonne entered the Grey &#038; Son Construction yard and pulled into the half-open delivery door of the huge warehouse. They passed rows of scaffolding filled with prefab doors and wall units until they reached a glass partitioned office. They could see Mark sitting alone at a desk, his head bowed. Stepping out of the car, they entered the office. \u201cMark,\u201d Alice said tentatively, \u201care you okay?\u201d \u201cYeah,\u201d Mark said glumly, \u201cI\u2019m just aces.\u201d \u201cI want to talk to both of you guys about Greta,\u201d Alice said, \u201cand I\u2014\u201d \u201cI\u2019m very sorry,\u201d Mark snapped, \u201cbut Greta is dead today. Could we interest you in someone else?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alice stepped closer to him with sympathy. \u201cIt was just an accident,\u201d Yvonne said. \u201cLike with Dan.\u201d \u201cNo accident,\u201d Alice said. \u201cI tried to warn all of you about Krueger.\u201d Yvonne shook her head. \u201cPlease, Alice\u2026\u201d Alice\u2019s words left an effect on Mark. He gave her a direct look. \u201cI thought about that.\u201d \u201cShe must have fallen asleep at the table,\u201d Alice said. \u201cStop it, Alice!\u201d Yvonne shouted. \u201cJust stop it. Stick to the facts.\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t understand what\u2019s happening!\u201d Alice said in frustration. \u201cKrueger has to use my dreams, but he got to Dan and Greta while I was awake. How\u2019s he doing it?\u201d \u201cWhy don\u2019t you two stick to reality,\u201d Yvonne said sharply. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you shut up and let her talk!\u201d Mark growled. \u201cTwo of us died in the last two days, does that strike you as particularly normal?\u201d \u201cMark,\u201d Yvonne said. \u201cI\u2019m not finished! I loved Greta, a lot. And if maybe, just maybe, someone or some thing killer her, I\u2019d like to hear about it!\u201d \u201cI can\u2019t listen to this,\u201d Yvonne said, turning away. \u201cThen get out!\u201d Yvonne turned for the stairs started out. Mark punched his fist against the desk and calmed down. \u201cYvonne, wait a minute, will ya?\u201d She stopped and turned. \u201cI\u2019m a jerk. I know I\u2019m not dealing with this very well and it\u2019s not your fault. I\u2019m sorry.\u201d Yvonne approached and gave him a little hug, trying to smile. \u201cIt\u2019s okay.\u201d \u201cStick around, please?\u201d Mark said. \u201cWish I could, but I\u2019m on night shift again. Gotta go.\u201d Alice put a comforting hand on Mark\u2019s shoulder. \u201cI can stay for a while if you want.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>After Yvonne departed, Alice and Mark went to Mark\u2019s loft in the warehouse. The entire loft was a network of scaffolding that contained his comic book collection, fantasy posters, sci-fi memorabilia, and tons of books on mythology and the occult. Tacked to the walls were dozens of drawings\u2014works in progress of Mark\u2019s super hero comic book creations. Alice and Mark sat at the drawing table. \u201cDo you think I\u2019m an idiot for being in love with her?\u201d Mark asked Alice. \u201cI mean, I know I didn\u2019t stand a chance with her, but&#8230;\u201d \u201cShe cared a lot about you,\u201d Alice replied. Mark nodded. \u201cMaybe it was her mother who killed her, with all that Polly Perfect junk.\u201d \u201cIt wasn\u2019t her mother. The only reason we\u2019re still here is that none of us has slept since the grad party.\u201d Mark looked at Alice. \u201cTell me more about this Krueger guy.\u201d \u201cWhy don\u2019t I make some coffee. There\u2019s a lot to tell.\u201d Alice left the room for the kitchen and made some coffee. When she returned with two steaming mugs, she realized Mark was gone. \u201cMark?\u201d Alice set the mugs on the drawing table. Then she saw something that stopped her cold. The sketch on the drawing table began moving, reassembling itself into a drawing of the Elm Street house. Mark was standing on the porch, opening the door. Alice reached her hand toward the sketch. \u201cMark\u2014no!\u201d But Mark stepped inside.<\/p>\n<p>Alice quickly picked up one of Mark\u2019s colored felt tip pens and drew a stick figure of herself next to the Elm Street house. She wrote \u201cAlice\u201d above the figure, then threw down the pen and closed her eyes, concentrating hard. When she opened her eyes, she found herself standing before the house. Alice rushed inside. She saw a huge gaping hole in the floor with jagged paper edges. Mark was desperately clinging to the edge which was slowly tearing. Alice rushed over and stretched her hand toward Mark. Terrified, Mark grabbed Alice\u2019s hand. Alice pulled him up. \u201cLet\u2019s get out of here!\u201d she cried. As Mark rushed out the door, Alice caught a glimpse of a child standing at a window, staring forlornly into the street. Alice gazed at the child with a mixture of compassion and wariness. \u201cJacob?\u201d Jacob faced her. He was pale and sickly. \u201cOh, hello,\u201d he said sadly. \u201cYou don\u2019t look very well. Are you feeling all right?\u201d \u201cBeen having bad dreams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alice thought for a moment. \u201cIs this where you live, Jacob?\u201d He shook his head. \u201cJust waiting for someone. It\u2019s sad about Greta.\u201d Alice stared at him, intrigued. \u201cIs that who you\u2019re waiting for?\u201d \u201cNo,\u201d Jacob said. \u201cI don\u2019t think this is a nice place for you to be. Maybe we should go find your mom.\u201d \u201cShe doesn\u2019t want me around,\u201d Jacob replied. \u201cOh, I\u2019m sure that\u2019s not true. I\u2019ll bet she\u2019s very worried about you. I would be.\u201d Jacob\u2019s face filled with hurt and accusation. \u201cNo, you\u2019re not! You don\u2019t even care about being a mom! How come you don\u2019t even think about me?\u201d Alice frowned. \u201cWho said I\u2026wait, what?\u201d Jacob\u2019s lonely eyes began welling up. \u201cI like you. I want to stay with you. Why don\u2019t you want me? Is there something wrong with me?\u201d Alice stared at him, stunned by the realization of the moment. \u201cWho says I don\u2019t like you?\u201d \u201cMy friend with the funny hand,\u201d Jacob said. <\/p>\n<p>Alice grew disturbed. She reached out and took Jacob by the hand. \u201cCome on, honey. We\u2019re getting out of here.\u201d Jacob pulled away, drawn by something in the shadows near the stairs. \u201cI have to go now. He wants me again.\u201d Jacob scurried up the stairs into the shadows. \u201cNo!\u201d Alice cried. \u201cJacob!\u201d Alice charged up the stairs&#8230; and found herself in Mark\u2019s loft. It was morning. She was back in reality. Mark sat up in his bed and stared at her in amazement. \u201cHe\u2019s really real, isn\u2019t he? Are you okay?\u201d \u201cHe\u2019s doing something to my baby. I know it. He\u2019s trying to hurt Jacob!\u201d \u201cWho\u2019s Jacob?\u201d \u201cMy baby!\u201d \u201cWhat, you named him already?\u201d Alice froze. \u201cYeah, I think he already has a name.\u201d She hurriedly began gathering her things. \u201cI\u2019ve got to get away from here. Someplace where Krueger can\u2019t find him.\u201d She bolted for the stairs. Mark restrained her. \u201cWhoa, slow down. How\u2019re you gonna hide from a guy like that, leave the planet?\u201d \u201cI don\u2019t know!\u201d Alice cried. Mark put his hands on her shoulders. \u201cLook, if you\u2019re worried about your baby, call Yvonne. Have the doctor check him out.\u201d Alice nodded as Mark handed her the telephone.
