She sat alone on the front steps, rocking herself slightly. She was nervous and agitated. \u201cHere you are,\u201d Alice said as she approached. \u201cWhere were you this morning? Rick\u2019s looking all over for you.\u201d \u201cHave you seen Joey and Kincaid?\u201d Kristen asked anxiously. \u201cI can\u2019t find them. I can\u2019t find them anywhere!\u201d \u201cI\u2019m sure they\u2019re around,\u201d Alice said. \u201cYeah, well I\u2019m not so sure.\u201d Kristen looked at Alice. Both had bags under their eyes. \u201cWe have matching luggage,\u201d Kristen said. Alice looked puzzled. Kristen smiled. \u201cThe bags under your eyes. Nightmares?\u201d Alice nodded. \u201cI hate dreaming,\u201d Kristen said. \u201cI love to dream,\u201d Alice said. \u201cI just hate the ones about my dad.\u201d \u201cHow do you deal with your nightmares?\u201d Kristen asked. \u201cMy mom taught me when I was little,\u201d Alice replied. \u201cDid you ever hear of the dream master?\u201d \u201cSounds like a game show host to me.\u201d \u201cNo, really,\u201d Alice said, \u201cit\u2019s a fable. The guardian of good dreams. It was like my teddy bear when I was growing up.\u201d \u201cGreat,\u201d Kristen said. \u201cWould you happen to know his phone number?\u201d Alice laughed. \u201cSo what do you do now?\u201d Kristen inquired. \u201cI daydream. You have to dream about some place fun. Remember, you\u2019re in control.\u201d \u201cHow\u2019d you learn so much about dreams?\u201d \u201cWhen they\u2019re all you have,\u201d Alice said, \u201cyou kinda become an expert.\u201d Kristen gave Alice a sympathetic look. The two girls sat in silence for a moment. \u201cI used to bring people into my dreams,\u201d Kristen stated. \u201cYou what?\u201d Alice said. \u201cWhen I used to have nightmares, I brought my friends in to help me. Until they all started dying.\u201d Alice looked confused. \u201cNever mind,\u201d Kristen said, \u201cit\u2019s too complicated. Let\u2019s get in before your brother starts a search party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kristen and Alice entered a filled classroom where Rick was already seated. Kristen stared at two empty seats\u2014and all the blood drained from her face. She started to tremble. A murmuring began deep inside her and built to a tortured cry as she shook her head. \u201cNooooo!\u201d she screamed. The other students were mesmerized by Kristen\u2019s outburst. Some of them glanced over at the empty seats. \u201cWhat is it?\u201d Rick asked. \u201cOh no,\u201d Kristen cried. \u201cHe killed them!\u201d Rick got up and took hold of Kristen\u2019s arm, but she pulled away with all her strength. The momentum of her violent move threw her off balance. Kristen fell back, slamming her head against the door. Then she slumped to the floor.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kristen found herself in the nurse\u2019s office. A school nurse was passing an ampule of smelling salts under Kristen\u2019s nose. Kristen shook her head and blinked. The nurse leaned down and smiled. \u201cFeeling better now?\u201d \u201cYeah,\u201d Kristen replied groggily. \u201cI guess so. What happened?\u201d \u201cYou had a nasty bump.\u201d As she regained her senses, Kristen looked up at the nurse with an expression of extreme urgency. \u201cI gotta get out of here!\u201d \u201cYou just stay put. You need rest.\u201d \u201cYou don\u2019t get it. He\u2019s after me.\u201d \u201cDon\u2019t worry honey\u2026\u201d The nurse turned and set down the smelling salts. Then the nurse faced Kristen. It was Freddy Krueger. Kristen let out a scream\u2026 \u2026and suddenly her eyes snapped open. The nurse was passing an ampule of smelling salts under Kristen\u2019s nose. The nurse leaned down and smiled. \u201cFeeling better now?\u201d Kristen didn\u2019t say a word.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>\u2014<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Later that day, Kristen and Rick drove to the Crave Inn Diner where Alice worked as a waitress. Kristen\u2019s friends Debbie and Dan were sitting in a booth. Alice was cleaning the table next to them. They startled her as they approached. \u201cAlice,\u201d Rick said urgently, \u201cdo you think you can leave early?\u201d Alice frowned. \u201cWhat\u2019s wrong?\u201d \u201cKincaid and Joey died last night.\u201d Alice\u2019s eyes flew open. \u201cWhat? Kristen, what happened?\u201d \u201cYou\u2019ll hear all kinds of stories. And after all we\u2019d been through together\u2026\u201d Kristen began crying. Alice reached over to comfort her as Debbie and Dan looked on with concern. \u201cHow could I let him get them?\u201d Kristen said. \u201cWe were a team.\u201d Suddenly, Kristen turned hard. \u201cI\u2019m gonna get that creep once and for all!\u201d \u201cWho?\u201d Alice said.
