\nFreddy Krueger is getting a wakeup call.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been set by New Line to relaunch the movie series centered on the iconic killer, who haunts the dreams of teenagers and kills them in their sleep.<\/p>\n

The trio will create a new franchise based on Wes Craven\u2019s 1984 film \u201cA Nightmare on Elm Street.\u201d<\/p>\n

Originally played by Robert Englund, the Krueger character haunted nine films and two TV series in what was New Line\u2019s most lucrative franchise until \u201cThe Lord of the Rings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Deal comes as Bay, Fuller and Form ready an early May start for \u201cFriday the 13th,\u201d New Line\u2019s relaunch of another iconic baddie, Jason Voorhees. Marcus Nispel will direct from a script by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift (\u201cFreddy vs. Jason\u201d).<\/p>\n

Both franchises will be given a complete overhaul, just as Platinum Dunes did with the Nispel-directed \u201cThe Texas Chainsaw Massacre.\u201d New Line won\u2019t hire a writer on \u201cNightmare\u201d until the writers strike ends.<\/p>\n

At Rogue Pictures, the Platinum Dunes team is prepping an exorcism thriller to be directed by David Goyer and a \u201cNear Dark\u201d remake to be directed by Samuel Bayer. Bay, Fuller and Form are also developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock\u2019s \u201cThe Birds,\u201d with Martin Campbell directing Naomi Watts.

Platinum Dunes, the company behind the “Amityville Horror” and “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” remakes, are planning to bring back the two biggest icons of 80’s cinematic horror.<\/p>\n

As previously announced, producers Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form have been working on a re-launch of the “Friday the 13th” franchise for New Line. Shooting on that project begins this April with Marcus Nispel (“Pathfinder”) directing.<\/p>\n

Now, New Line has also hired the trio to re-launch the cornerstone franchise that established the mini-major – “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Both series will be given a “complete overhaul” according to the trades.<\/p>\n

New Line won’t hire a writer on “Nightmare” until the writers strike ends. The original Wes Craven-directed 1984 original centered on Freddy Krueger, a serial child killer murdered by angry parents who returns with a burned face and razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.<\/p>\n

Friday’s Jason Voorhees and Elm Street’s Krueger last appeared in 2002’s successful but generally panned “Freddy vs. Jason”. Scribes Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, who penned that film, are writing the new ‘Friday’.<\/p>\n

Platinum Dunes is still on course to remake \u201cNear Dark\u201d for Rogue Pictures and \u201cThe Birds\u201d for Universal Pictures.

New Line is in talks with horror production company Platinum Dunes to re-launch the “Nightmare on Elm Street” movie series, the franchise that helped establish the studio.<\/p>\n

The first “Nightmare” movie was made by Wes Craven and released in 1984. The runaway success of the film spawned a slew of sequels and created one of the most popular villains in screen history, Freddy Krueger, played by Robert Englund.<\/p>\n

The film centered on Krueger, a serial child killer murdered by angry parents, who returns with a burned face and a razor glove to terrorize teens in their dreams.<\/p>\n

A screenwriter will be hired once the Writers Guild of America strike ends. The producers — Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form — are hoping to focus part of the new movie on Krueger’s backstory.<\/p>\n

Platinum Dunes is prepping another re-launch, “Friday the 13th,” which will be directed by Marcus Nispel for New Line, for whom it remade “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre” and its sequel.<\/p>\n

The company is remaking “Near Dark” for Rogue and “The Birds” for Universal. It is also prepping a non-remake project, an untitled David Goyer thriller.<\/p>\n
